Frequently asked questions

What to wear? Please look at the pictures of the classes above. It really is up to you, dress as up or down as much you want! However it is best to wear Loose and comfortable clothes leggings ,dance pants any top, a scarf around the hips if possible. Look at class pictures

 Am I too old/fat/thin to belly dance? NO! Belly dancers are all shapes and sizes. Belly Dance is for women of all ages, nationalities and sexualities. I teach children from age 8.

 If it's not for me do I have to pay for the whole course? Of course not, that is why we have a £5 taster option.

Can I pay weekly? No sorry ,that does not work for me.

Do you hold private lessons? Yes! Please  click here.

Will it help me lose weight? Like all aerobic exercise it can help you burn around 500 calories an hour. My classes are designed to have aerobic benefits.

Will it help me tone up? Yes! If you keep at it! My classes also include stretching, stamina and conditioning exercises. 

How long will it take me to learn? How long is a piece of string? It depends on how often you come to class, and how often you practice. If you use the Arabesque Video between classes this will greatly enhance your learning - I have seen people performing after only six months and looking lovely.

 Do I have to show my belly? Only if you want to, its fine to keep your belly covered if you want to.

What will a typical course consist of? It will be a selection from the aspects mentioned in class details. I do hold workshops and small group sessions to develop various strands of bellydance. Classes will give an introduction, but may focus on one element per course. Each lesson will have a large element of stretching and conditioning moves as well as technique.

I have health/mobility problem can I do belly dance? Please ask a health professional if you have any health concerns. Belly Dance can help alleviate a wide variety of mental and physical health problems.

Is it you who teaches all the classes? Definitely most of them. If I can't then it will be some one fab who takes the class.

Ishtar I really want to perform any chance of you helping me do this? Of course! I organise shows for this reason. However I don't have performance platforms for dancers who are not part of the Ishtar school. To be involved You will have to commit yourself to rehearsals .

Ishtar I really don't' want to performwill I be pressured to do this? Of course not, not everyone wants to perform. 

Can men join? Men are welcome at shows and certain workshops. 

I want to come to a belly dance class but I feel shy and insecure. Please don’t worry lots of people feel this way. Belly dance makes people feel much more confident. My classes are filled with nice, friendly women who will make you welcome.
